I viewed the 2002 SALT Visit Report (which is the last documented visit report) for Narragansett High School. At the time, two areas for improvement included the areas of discipline and differentiated instruction. I think my Cooperating Teacher does a good job of instilling discipline in her students through mutual respect. She treat the students with respect. As a result, if my Coordinating teacher notices students who are acting up, the students know right away that they are disrespecting the teacher and adjust their focus accordingly. Mutual respect will go a long way with a student.
My teacher is also cognizant about differentiated instruction. One of her students has a hard time writing with a pencil/pen. He uses a laptop to write his notes. He is not able to write on the handout during the lecture. My teacher sends the student an electronic copy of the handout so that he can fill out the information using his computer.
One of the things I hope to achieve is to create daily plans that incorporate the multiple intelligences. I feel if I can be cognizant of the multiple intelligences of my students, I will be able to have a connection with my students. I need to think about my visual and tactile learners as I create my daily plans.
In addition to thinking about differentiated instruction, student teaching will definitely allow me to practice controlling discipline while I teach. I think I need to create and foster and respectful relationship with my students. If this occurs, then and only then, will I be able to tackle misbehavior.
Hi Akash,
I'm glad you're in a orderly classroom. Be sure to observe how your CT communicates her expectations regarding respect and how she models this to her students. I find your explanation of differentiating instruction interesting. How does your CT approach this issue? What exactly did the SALT visit folks recommend? - fogleman Feb 7, 2010
